It won’t be long until warblers are headed to their wintering grounds and as they pass through the US, they will cause many birders some identification challenges. Yes, many of the males will still be in breeding plumage making them quite easy to identify but the females as well as all of the young birds will make things a bit trickier. In order to really prepare for the challenge of identifying fall warblers, I highly recommend that everyone get a copy of The Warbler Guide by Tom Stephenson and Scott Whittle. This is by far the best book that has been written about how to identify warblers. In addition to the awesome book, there is now an app for Apple devices. The app has some incredible features like the ability to view many of the warblers in 3D! Be sure to get a copy of the book and app before the warblers arrive.
