Backyard Photo Contest

We've narrowed down the entries for our “Feathered Friends” category, and now it's up to you to pick the winner.

Golden Opportunity

"I was taking photos in my backyard last spring when this American goldfinch caught my eye," writes Steve Vetter of Bethel Springs, Tennessee. "The bird just landed among the blooms of a flowering quince."

Bird on a Wire

"We had a nest of eastern phoebes one year," writes Brook Burling of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. "One day, I was fortunate enough to snap a photo of this little one hanging out on some barbed wire."

Take a Bite

"I took this photo at the gardens of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum near Tucson," says Greg Tucker of Los Angeles. "I enjoy how the pure blue sky completely surrounds this pyrrhuloxia as it eats a similarly colored ocotillo bloom."

Hummingbird Magic

"I love hummingbirds," writes Sherrie Prachyl of Houston, Texas. "Every year we put out about 10 feeders and also grow lots of plants to attract these fliers. I never imagined I’d be a bird-watcher, but my husband got me hooked. Here’s a photo of a ruby-throated hummingbird I snapped while it was visiting one of our feeders."

Airborne

"I was trying to photograph goldfinches when I spotted this tufted titmouse on a branch," says Doris Dumrauf of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. "I took a couple of photos, and when I looked at the bird on my computer screen, I saw that it was airborne!"
