Everyone loves attracting hummingbirds to their yard. They are such energetic and entertaining birds all crammed in a tiny package! We all want to keep our hummers happy and well-fed so they continue visiting our feeders all summer. Follow these tips to ensure that your hummingbirds will keep visiting your feeders!

1. Mix Your Own Sugar Water

Hummingbirds love the nectar you make using just sugar and water. Mix 4 parts water with 1 part sugar, it’s that simple! Hummingbird experts all agree that you should not be using red dye because it can be harmful to the birds. Also, use only pure white cane sugar, not honey or artificial sweetners.

2. Keep Your Feeders Clean

Clean feeders lead to happy hummingbirds. You should be changing the nectar any time that you notice it is getting cloudy. During the hottest months, this might be ever 2 days.

3. Don’t Buy a Huge Feeder

Unless you are fortunate to live in an area with a huge concentration of hummingbirds, there is no reason to buy a huge feeder. This will just lead to you wasting a lot of nectar since it will go bad before the birds use all of it.

4. Use an Ant Moat

Use an ant moat to keep those pesky ants away from your hummingbirds. They are very simple and effective. Just hang your feeder from one and fill the moat with water. My favorite hummingbird feeder, the HummZinger by Aspects, has an ant moat already built it!
