Prothonotary Warbler

prō-ˈthä-nə-ˌter-ē  or prō-thə-ˈnō-tə-rē

When I first started learning about birds, I think I completely botched the pronunciation of prothonotary warbler. To be honest, I’m still not great at spelling this bird’s name, either.

Pyrrhuloxia

pir-(y)ə-¦läk-sē-ə

Dang, this one looks tough. Can we just say desert cardinal? No? All right, fine. Just think like a cat eating salmon and say, “prrr-a-lox-see-ya.”

Phainopepla

phai·no·pep·la

For this black crested silky flycatcher, just think of a fairy, albeit a crested black one with red eyes, and say, “fay-no-pep-la.”

Pileated Woodpecker

pī-lē-ˌā-təd

There are a couple of ways to say this large woodpecker‘s name. Stick with either PIE-lee-ay-tid or PILL-ee-ay-tid but not “pie-lated,” like I’d like a piece of pie for later, please.

Pied-Billed Grebe

grēb

Two syllables or one? This one had some of our staff stumped. Gree-bee like green bee or greebuh like grub?

Wilson’s Phalarope

fa-lə-ˌrōp

For some reason, I always mix up the L and the R and say “phar-a-lope” like a an Egyptian pharaoh. Think FAL-eh-rope.

Dickcissel

dik-ˈsi-səl

Here’s another one I struggle to spell correctly, let alone pronounce correctly. All the c’s and s’s mix me up. But the correct way to say this bird is more like “sis-el” than like “sizzle.”

Roseate Spoonbill

rō-zē-ət

There are a lot more syllables in this bird’s name than you might think. “Rose-ee-uhht” spoonbill, not “rosette.”

Lazuli Bunting

la-zə-lē

Is it las-lo or lazy? To be honest, I’m wasn’t sure about this pretty blue bunting until I looked it up.

Piping Plover

plə-vər plō-

You say PLUHV-er, I say PLOV-er. Both versions are correct! But is it “pip-ing or pipe-ing? SIGH.

American Goshawk

This large raptor, formerly known as the northern goshawk, sounds like “goss-hawk” not, “Gosh, it’s a gosh-hawk,” or gas-hog.

Calliope Hummingbird

kə-ˈlī-ə-(ˌ)pē

If you’re musical or study Greek mythology, this small hummingbird‘s name is probably a cinch to pronounce. Say keh-LIE-o-pee, not KAL-ee-ope or karaoke.

That sneaky p is silent. Think tar-mi-gan, which kind of sounds like Michigan.

Bobolink

bä-bə-ˌliŋk

I Love Lucy show fans might remember Ricky’s signature song, Bablu. For other birders, think “Ba-ba-link” not Bow-bow-link.
