Look for the prairie warbler’s black eye line and semicircle eye ring.

This colorful warbler brightens up forests and scrubby habitats in the southeastern United States. To spot a prairie warbler, look for a sparrow-sized, lively yellow bird with a long tail and a black eye line. Other identifying plumage includes olive-colored feathers on the head and continuing down the back, a black semicircle beneath the eye and black streaking on the breast, and a brown patch on the back. They habitually flick their tails and hop through brush.

Females’ plumage is less dramatic, but it follows similar patterning. Her head is grayish, and the black streaks on her feathers are less pronounced.

Range and Habitat

Birders can see prairie warblers throughout the southeast during the breeding season.

Prairie warblers migrate from the Caribbean to spend summers in the southeastern and portions of the eastern United States. Their range extends through the southernmost portions of Maine. Sections of the Midwest glimpse them, too, including southern Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

Contrary to its name, the species is not commonly found in prairies. Within their range, prairie warblers frequently appear in brushy habitats, old clearings, and at forest edges. Search for them in low pines and regenerating forests. In Florida, they appear in mangrove forests. During the winter, prairie warblers join mixed-species flocks.

Diet: What Do Prairie Warblers Eat?

Not dissimilarly to other warblers, the prairie warbler mainly eats insects. Its diet includes caterpillars, ants, flies, spiders, and millipedes. Less commonly, they’ll dine on berries, tree sap, and fruit.

Nesting Habits

Prairie warbler males usually return to the same breeding grounds, but this behavior isn’t common in females. The species sometimes nests in colonies. Nests are generally placed in trees or shrubs, 3 to 7 feet above the ground. The female lays three to five eggs, and she can have up to two broods in a season. She incubates the eggs for up to two weeks, and a week to two weeks later, young leave the nest.

Look for prairie warblers singing in pine trees.

Male prairie warblers sing two different songs. One, they direct at females as they sing from the tops of trees: this is a series of high-pitched, accelerating and buzzy notes often described as zee-zee-zee! The second song consists of clear notes followed by a raspy jumble, and the warbler targets it at competing males.
