Eastern Bluebird Brightens a Gray Day

“During a long run of rainy days in Ohio, I was practicing with a new lens through my window. This beautiful male eastern bluebird flew into my backyard and landed just long enough for me to capture his grumpy, wet face. I think he was just as tired of the rain as I was,” says Birds & Blooms reader Jennifer Pietrondi.

Summer Rain With a Cardinal

I was visiting my brother in Murphy, North Carolina, this past late June. I was sitting on his front porch after a summer rain and a cardinal landed on his driveway post. The northern cardinal was so pretty,” says reader Gail Jakubiak

Beautiful Blooms, Rain or Shine

“Since living on the Gulf Coast, I’ve had to learn through trial and error what plants will thrive and stand up to the coastal conditions here on Perdido Key. One of my tried and true is the lovely coral honeysuckle. Its blossoms are beautiful even in the rain,” says reader Sandra Williams.

Raindrops on a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

“This female ruby-throated hummingbird perched on a string of lights in the rain. I captured the scene from my backyard at the end of summer a few years ago. I enjoy this photo because it depicts a more contemplative hummingbird sitting still long enough to allow for raindrops to streak past. The light bulbs give a sense of scale, and I imagine she’s lost in thought about the enormity of the world around her,” says reader Peter Gifford.

Atlantic Puffin Flies Through the Rain

“A couple of years ago I traveled to Machias Seal Island off the coast of Maine with some friends to photograph Atlantic puffins. Four of us were in a very small blind, poking our lenses out to capture what we could. It was a fantastic trip! One of my goals was to capture a puffin in flight, which proved to be a difficult task. I fell in love with these birds. This is one of my favorite shots from that wonderful, rainy day,” says reader Patricia Welch.

Hooded Merganser in the Wet Winter Weather

“On a rainy day, I decided to visit a local pond where I’d been watching hooded mergansers since the start of winter. I have enjoyed photographing spring warblers in light rain, so I figured why not give winter waterfowl a try! All in all, it was a great experience. I loved the way the rain beaded off the birds’ tufts, and I was so amazed at the way the rain did not bother the birds at all,” says reader Michael Rossacci.

Tiny Flowers and Rain Showers

“While walking at the University of Guelph arboretum, I noticed this lovely summer snowflake plant. It was early in the morning just after a rain. I love the drops of water on the plant,” says reader Brenda Doherty.

Monarch Chrysalis Rain Pictures

“I started a butterfly garden in July of 2023. A few years later, the monarchs are numerous in my backyard. I have milkweed plants for the caterpillars to host on and several different nectar plants for the butterflies to feed on. I’ve found chrysalises hanging all over the yard, but when I came upon this one hanging from a tomato cage with raindrops, it caught my eye. It was absolutely stunning,” says Shelley Ballam.

“This is a shot of a male northern flicker perched on my planter in the rain. The colors were so beautiful in this shot even though it was raining,” says reader Jeannine Gailey.

Rain on Pretty Poppies

“We have a bed of poppies beside our front porch. Every year I try to replicate Georgia O’Keeffe’s famous painting. No luck, but I did like this picture of the underside after a morning rain,” says reader Mike Selegue.
