Autumn Watercolors

“The gull is a common bird that we take for granted when think of or look at nature photos. I like the calmness of the gull with the reflection of the fall colors in the water,” says reader George Mcdermott.

Mr. Salty

“I would like to introduce you to Salty Seagull. I met Salty one day on the Huntington Beach Pier in California while I was taking some photos of the surfing action. Salty swooped in and wanted to land on the rail, but apparently I was standing right where he wanted to land—his spot I guess. So he veered around me and landed on the rail on the opposite side. After he landed, he turned around and gave me a look like he was saying: ‘Dude! That’s my spot.’ True story,” says reader David Rhiner.

New Bird Photographer

“I took this photo on a brisk winter day at Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I believe the species is a ring-billed gull, but I’m not completely positive. This photo is very special to me as it was taken on my first ever bird photography outing. I love the way I caught the bird with its wings spread far and wide—almost like it is suspended in the air,” says reader Lauren Capraro.

Morning Flyby

“While visiting Galveston, Texas, I would frequently walk the seawall every morning before the throngs of tourists made their way down to the beach. I noticed the gulls were flying all around me hoping that I had brought them some tasty morsel for their breakfast. One gull seemed to glide through the air, floating on the morning breeze. I captured the gull’s picture as he was soaring above the seawall with the skyline of restaurants and shops aglow with the morning sun as a backdrop. This photograph reminds me that the beach is the gull’s home and we are simply visitors to their playground,” says reader Linda Davidson.

The Joy of Gulls

“This picture of a gull was taken at Goat Rock Beach in Jenner, California. I live in Colorado, which is nowhere near the ocean. Because of that, every time I go to California I am often entertained by the gulls. They have a lot of personality and always bring a big smile to my face,” says reader Renee Molck.

Gorgeous Gulls

Sparkles on the Sea

“I live close to the ocean in South Carolina. One of my favorites things to do, other than photography, is walking by the small beach area called the Sands. There’s a lot of wildlife here: dolphins, sea turtles and of course many kinds of birds. I love the sparkles on the water as well as spread of the gull’s wings,” says reader Cathy Brown.
