Unlikely Animal Friends

“On a trip to Cape Cod at the end of September my husband and I came across quite the sight at the National Seashore visitor center. A group of turkeys were following a fox all over in what looked like a game of the follow the leader. When the fox stopped to take a break, they all stopped with him appearing to not know what to do! It was so comical to watch, as you would think the fox would be chasing the turkeys—but instead they all seemed to be friends!” says reader Karen Christman.

Two-headed Turkey?

“In early spring, the wild turkeys were actively seeking mates. I was sitting in a blind located on Butch Ramirez’s Rocking R6 Ranch near Laredo, Texas. Then out from the brush came these two turkeys. While I was shooting, both gobbled at the same time. I call it Double Gobble,” says reader Curtis Rogers.

Field of Dreams

“I often walk on a bike path near our home, and this funny turkey has played hide-and-seek with me all summer long. On this day, when I had my camera with me, it appeared in the neighbor’s hay field, headed for the cornfield. It has dropped feathers on the path on occasion, maybe just to let me know it is still around. Sometimes I glimpse it on the path, sometimes crossing the path. Once it walked along the fence, parallel to the path—warily keeping its eye on me,” says reader Gwen Jones.

Protection Under Mom’s Wing

“I watched this momma turkey protectively cover her two babies (poults) with her wing when a red-shouldered hawk flew over head. They were sitting on my back fence for over an hour,” says reader Vicky Marella.

Count the Turkeys

“I live on the edge of the Allegan State Forest, so I frequently have wildlife in my yard such as deer and turkeys. I love it when they bring their offspring with them. This summer, a flock of wild turkeys spent time wandering around my property. I took several photos of them but my favorite was this one when they were traveling through the Queen Ann’s lace on the edge of the woods,” says reader Elsie Jones.

What a Flirt

Eastern wild turkeys have been a conservation success story over the past 30 years in Minnesota. Once rare, eastern turkey numbers have grown to over 70,000! This photo was taken along the banks of the Mississippi River outside Minneapolis. Breeding season was just beginning and this gobbler was strutting his brilliant colors and displaying courtship behaviors to attract a hen. This photo is special because we tend to think beauty is only found in the songbirds, eagles, and owls. Sometimes we need to take a closer look,” says reader Nancy Berg.

Taking the Kids for a Walk

After a long winter, I always look forward to spring when nature renews itself. Our woods are teaming with wildlife: fox, deer, raccoon, chipmunks, squirrels, and of course a plethora of birds; some migratory and others year-round residents. It is not unusual to see a flock of eastern wild turkeys making their way through the woods. However, this particular morning I was surprised to see a hen leading her poults on a leisurely stroll out in the open. How cute are those poults? A perfect family portrait!” says reader Robert Lowe.

Ready to Fly

“I used to live in an area that had plenty of wildlife. It was easy to get photographs because they would always hang around the house. One morning I looked out of my kitchen window and spotted this turkey. It was resting on the branch and then, after a while, it decided it was time to leave,” says reader Joseph Zahnle.

Looking for Love

“I photographed this wild turkey during a spring time call near Agate Lake in southern Oregon. While I was photographing lakeside birds, I heard him calling up the hill. I started a slow hike in his direction, staying about 15 feet away behind the trees and brush. He stayed near me for quite a while, but unfortunately his calls did not attract the desired females,” says reader Erin Gilkison.
