Decorate Easter Eggs with Colorful Washi Paper

Skip the messy dyes and decorate eggs with cheerful washi paper to create a cheerful Easter centerpiece.

Do something different for Easter this year and wrap empty eggs with washi paper to create a bright and cheery effect for this beloved spring holiday. These work great as an Easter dinner table centerpiece. (And if you love this craft, check out our sister publication Country Woman Magazine, where it originally appeared!)

Blowing Out Eggs

Before you grab your favorite washi paper pattern, review these quick, simple instructions for emptying the eggs out.

Materials:

  • Eggs and carton
  • Large bowl
  • Straw cut to 4 inches
  • Thumbtack
  • Wood skewer
  • Kitchen or tea towel

Directions:

  1. With egg in carton, press thumbtack firmly into the top and bottom of egg to puncture shell.
  2. At the bottom of the egg, insert the sharp end of a skewer and rotate it to break up the yolk. Wrap the egg in a towel and shake it several times to further break up the contents.
  3. Place a straw over the hole at the top of the egg and blow out contents into a bowl. If yolk does not flow easily out of the egg, repeat steps 2 and 3 as needed until egg is empty. Reserve for another use, like an Easter quiche!
  4. Wash egg in warm soapy water; dry. Blow through egg one final time to ensure that the inside of the shell is completely clear.

BONUS TIP! Don’t have time to decoupage? Instead of using washi paper, layer strips of washi tape onto your eggs. It works just as well!

Materials:

  • Blown eggs (see above for directions)
  • Washi or origami paper in various colors (available for purchase at most craft stores and online)
  • Measuring tape
  • Ruler
  • Cutting mat
  • Decoupage glue
  • Craft knife
  • Paintbrush

Step-By-Step Instructions:

Step 1

Start with an empty egg shell. Cut washi paper 1/8-in. bigger than the circumference and height of the egg.

Step 2

Fold paper in half lengthwise, then again crosswise. Cut 1/4-in. strips along the long side of the paper, stopping 1/4-in. before the center fold.

Step 3

Trim the ends of each 1/4-in. strip to a point. Unfold paper and place wrong side up on a piece of parchment paper. Use a brush to spread on a thin layer of glue.

Step 4

Lay egg against a short side and wrap the paper around the egg. Press each strip toward the tip of the egg, one piece at a time. Each strip should slightly overlap the previous one. Work your way slowly around the egg, smoothing out the paper strips with your fingers. Brush glue over the top of each strip of paper as you go. Repeat on bottom half of the egg.

Step 5

Apply a layer of glue over the entire egg and set on parchment paper to dry. Once your eggs are completely dry, arrange them in a cute bowl. We used a pretty colander!
