Aluminum Leaves Recycled Crafts Project

Don’t toss those aluminum cans in the recycling bin – save them for this fun recycled crafts project!

Looking for a fun fall crafts project? Grab some aluminum cans and create these beautiful leaves for practically nothing! This recycled crafts idea is great for other natural objects too, like leaves, acorns, pinecones, and more. Be careful handling the aluminum, though, since the sharp edges can cut you very easily. Wear gloves and take safety precautions.

Materials:

  • Empty aluminum beverage cans
  • Ribbon or raffia
  • Scissors
  • Sandpaper
  • Pen or pencil
  • Nail

Step-By-Step Instructions:

Step 1

Cut the top and bottom off the aluminum can with scissors. You might need to make the first cut with a knife, so be sure to wear gloves and safety glasses.

Step 2

Trace your design with a pencil or ballpoint pen.  We like using real leaves, but you could use a drawing or just freehand it.

Step 3

Cut along the lines. Be careful of sharp edges.

Step 4

Use a nail to make a hole for hanging.

Step 5

Sand the piece to get a nice smooth surface. (A sanding block is really handy for this.)  You can sand the color off your can completely, but we prefer a distressed look.

Step 6

Add a ribbon or raffia for hanging.
