Squirrels! These hungry, bushy-tailed critters love raiding backyard feeders and can be a pain in the neck for backyard gardeners and birders. But it’s hard not to smile when they get themselves into silly situations (which seems to happen at least six or seven times in an average day for a squirrel!). Sit back and have a laugh at this round-up of hilarious squirrel hijinks.

The squirrels in my yard are too busy stealing my pecans to look cute.

Our squirrels provide us entertainment all year long. We feed about 20 squirrels all the time. There is a squirrel lovers club: http://www.thesquirrelloversclub.com or email:[email protected], we of course are members. There is also a squirrel appreciation day.

When my now deceased partner and I lived in LA we loved feeding the squirrels. We bought bought bulk walnuts. They had huge bushy golden tails and we found out that veterans from Tennessee who are at the VA Hospital missed the squirrels and had some sent up. We had one squirrel come that was the first and just a big golden tails, we named her Goldie. Some of her friends started coming around that were all so beautifully golden and we call them fogs, Friends of Goldie. I know they can be a nuisance to some comma but they would lay out on our warm balcony with full tummies and it was a delight to have that life amongst us. I’ve moved to a new location 100 miles away and there are lots and lots and lots squirrels at the golf course across the street. That is also the home of 100 hummingbirds who come visit our five feeders. I feed the hummingbirds and The Sparrows and the dove and the Orioles and it makes me feel like I have more friends than anyone else in the world. I’m dying of lung cancer but I still have so many visitors.

God bless you and your wonderful hospitality toward all His creatures that you feed. May your friends continue to give you so much joy.

The housing shortage reached unacceptable level – the “citizens” are living on top of each other.

I wish I had a picture of the squirrel sliding down the shepherd’s hook that holds my bird feeders after I greased it with Vaseline. Too funny.

I yelled at a red squirrel for eating all my apples and then I saw it take an apple up the tree and if I hadn’t moved he would have dropped it on me. Red squirrels are very argumentative. I saw one dispute with a blue jay over some seeds. Gray squirrels are cute.

I used to battle with the grey squirrels and then I gave in. I now put out food for them. Corn on the cob, sunflower seeds, peanuts. I have a grey squirrel that is very friendly and comes up to me as if to ask for food. (yes I am mindful of disease etc). I love this squirrel. I have a couple of red squirrels that frequent my yard and they are brats!! 🙂 I have a woodchuck that visits my yard. My feeling is that we have to live with nature!!!
Elaine Hanak-Hall says
I have always loved squirrels and fed them their own corn cob on the front porch to keep them off the bird feeders in the back. I had one favorite who came right up to me for peanuts. Another one brought her babies to the feeder so she could teach them where to eat. They are a constant source of entertainment. We live in a new area now and the trees are small, no squirrels! I miss them.
M. Hughes says
They are cute, but living in a condo community, it is not a good idea to feed the furry, little rodents. The other morning I looked out my back window and saw a raccoon trying to get into the squirrel nest.

I think the title for this picture should be:
Oh, dear – the kids have come home to stay!
I have 5 gray squirrels (a family group) that live in my back yard. They are a “troupe” and very protective of their territory. Two of the “kids” play ring-around the pine tree trunk every day. They chase each other but never catch one another. I take it this is exercise. Now, when I go out to feed the birds, they are first on the spot and are no longer afraid of me if I stand still. They get quite close sometimes. They share with the birds that come in.

Loved the photos. I needed a good laugh.
Veronica Souza says
Its so wonderful to see that others still share the joy of nature. My house sets in the woods near a lake so the real varmints that torment my bird and squirrel feeding activities are the deer, occasional moose, and wild turkeys that sneak in my back yard to steal the food. Hope you all are not plagued with them.
