Beautiful crop Gary. You are truely a great veggie gardener. I usually take my extra bell peppers, stuff and freeze them for winter…they taste so good when it is cold and dreary outside.

I planted one this year and it is still a tiny plant but has three huge blooms on it now.

I haven’t seen an earwig since I left NY State. We have all kinds of beetles around here but they don’t seem to bother the plants, since it has been so dry this year even the slugs and snails haven’t bothered anything. The only problem I have had is the Japanese Beetles and they seem to be gone now finally.

Thanks Charlene maybe I can talk her into sharing some cuttings from hers? I just realized for some reason I have posted twice this morning, got kicked off the first time and didn’t think it took so I did it again. Sheesh dial up is more dependable than Verizon Broadband [:@]

My favorite local nursery carries a lot of proven winners so I will try there first. The price online is pretty steep so I will try to find one locally first. I already have a white and a blue think the red would be pretty with them. The two I have were started from a package of seed I got from Park several years ago that were supposed to be dwarfs. Of all of the ones I started only one is dwarf the rest are huge.

My favorite nursery carries a lot of Proven Winners. At the price they are asking for online I think I will wait until they have one there.

Since my pool is 5′ high I only needed to have fencing around the deck. Code is 4′ or less before you have to fence the whole above ground fence. And since mine is right in front of the house I can see it from every window so I don’t even lock the gate when I am home. As I said there are no longer any kids in the neighborhood so I don’t have to worry about one straying in. DGD is the youngest one in the area and she is almost 16~

I actually let some things go, kept the perennials watered enough to keep them alive. They would bloom and fade the very next day so that was depressing.  We have been lucky to get two good rains this week so things are green but the heat just makes them quit blooming and go to seed, I suspect that is a defense of the plant. I know some of you have had even less rain than I have and I feel for you all. Just do what you can with the things you cherish the most and let the rest go, We aren’t superwomen we can only do just so much.

I had an inground pool in Al. with a fence around it. Looked out one night and two boys were in the pool swimming. The kid across the road and a buddy. Before I got out there the kids mother was coming though the yard and she whipped that kid all the way home. They had a big above ground pool but these two kids wanted to try mine out. They had actually climbed over the fence.  I do keep the gate locked if I am not going to be home but we don’t have any kids around here now so don’t worry about it when I am home.

Wendy I actually had to look on the calendar to see what day it was before I started this thread. Since I don’t work any more I forget what day it is.

Gayle I hate to hear that you are having problems with work, they seem to think that good help is disposable now there is always another warm body willing to take the place of you. Too bad but that is how it goes these days.

I also wondered about the liability thing with people using the pool when I wasn’t there. DD has a friend who brings her 3 kids to swim and I go out when they are here, they insist on standing on the coping and jumping in, not safe and not good for the coping either. If I am not home I keep the gate locked.

I would risk a guess it could be an armadillo hole. Way too big for a vole. Do you have armadillos that far up in NC now? We were just getting them in N Al. when I left there in 2004.

I do use some in the bottoms of big pots and add new soil on top of that to plant in. Never had a problem doing that.

I live in an area that has trash transfer stations so all of that goes straight to the dump. There are attendants there to be sure nobody takes anything out of the bins. So no way is it possible to get any goodies from the side of the road here. Wendy (Sunshine) travels her streets the night before trash day and finds some real great things to use like chairs which she paints and uses to put pots in. Maybe she will see this and show some of her pics.

I have grown that for years and it goes so well in the front of the beds. For some reason mine has not come back the last two years and I forgot to start more. I need to get the seed for some next year it has always been a favorite here. Never saw it get more than 8″ tall here in full sun.

I am with you on that one Martha. I have two different Japanese painted ferns and several different green ones that I don’t know the names of them and they are planted with my hosta in one bed, and mixed with a lot of other things in another one.
