They also “say” it is not contagious until the person actually has symptoms.

I see there was a nurse returning  (today, I think) to the Newark airport  from treating patients  in Africa  & they didn’t let her leave the airport.  Put her in mandatory quarantine right then & there. ( A new rule now in NY & NJ & I say ’bout time.)  Anyway, she developed a fever a few hours ago.  No further word yet.   So looks like the health care workers are bringing it back with them.

Bless them for volunteering & helping but for God’s sake don’t bring it home with you.  Use some common sense.  I hope those that are still there or on the way back see these new cases, realize that they are not “safe”  & have the good sense to quarantine themselves before getting on a plane.

On a happier note; the 2 nurses from Dallas are Ebola free now & going home.  One is meeting with the President at some point.   So , at least, the care here is better than there.   But then we are not overrun with the virus & let’s pray really hard we don’t get to that point.

It was a nice day.  I worked in the yard a little & took Chelsea for a looong walk.  Much farther than we usually go.

Actually did a little Christmas shopping online.  Just a couple of things.

Good evening everybody.  It was a great day her.  Sunny, pleasant & mild.

I didn’t get a lot done.  Most of the outside stuff is already done.  I did pull weeds & grass from along the fence & I went on a long walk with Chelsea.  Probably 2-3 times the distance we usually walk.  It was such nice weather & I was feeling pretty good so we set out for some new territory.

I was sitting in the recliner later & thinking about what I wanted to do with the yard next year.  I’ve decided I’m not really happy with the bed where I have my Poppies.  It gets to looking overgrown as the poppies get taller & then last year it got full of volunteer cosmos & I really didn’t like that look.  I’ve already sowed Cleome & Poppies in it for next year, but I’ve decided the problem is it needs to be smaller.   I have no intention of giving up my Poppies but I do think I will dig up a small Incrediball Hydrangea from one end of it & re-form the bed to make it a little smaller.  Which also means moving a clematis from the middle to one of the ends.  Might do that tomorrow.  I will put the Hydrangea (it came from a sucker on the Mama plant) in a pot for now & decide what I want to do with it later.   I’d like to replant it somewhere but I don’t know where.  They get pretty big & I only have so much room.  Maybe between now & Spring I’ll think of something.   I might do away with the Liatris & put this Hydrangea in that area instead.

Then the next bed back is what I call my shrub bed.  A long oval shaped bed with Nine Bark, Pinky Winky Hydrangea & Ginger in it.  I’m thinking of adding some Iris to that.

    Always changing something.   LOL

I know, veggie gardening is a pretty dead subject. :(   I think they should just combine it with Gardening & leave it at that.   It was slow before they re-formatted.

Maxine, I don’t think they are moving the posts as much as they used to.  I mean we talk about everything on Gardening so you should have some leeway to do the same on Veggies.    I guess they were trying to keep it from being a general chit chat spot with no connection to veggies.

I can see if somebody posts a question in this forum about what kind of bird for example.  Yes, that would work better in the Bird forum but otherwise —-

In the beginning they were trying to get people to visit all the forums & I think that is why they shifted stuff around.  But now everybody has kind of settled where they feel the most comfortable & I don’t see a problem with that.

That being said, most vegetable gardens are over with so not many veggie subjects to discuss now.   Hopefully, it will pick back up in the Spring.

Good buy on that chair, Janet.  If I try the Salt Pork some time I’ll skip the rind.  I don’t like tough or hard foods anyway & since I broke a tooth off at the gum line this summer on a piece of watermelon & another one the same way with a toothpick I’ll definitely stay away from the rind.

If Terry’s right it isn’t cheaper than bacon.  I thought it would be.

The talk of food is making me hungry so I need to go get my supper.  Chinese food but not chicken feet.  What is there to eat on chicken feet, I wonder?

I read this story on FB & he did put himself in isolation as soon as he started showing symptoms & immediately called the hospital who came to get him in hazmat gear,  so that was the right thing to do.   Supposedly, it is not contagious until the symptoms show up so little risk to  others he was around prior to that.   But,  I would expect his fiancee has definitely been exposed

However, I still say that people  traveling from areas where Ebola is rampant & especially people who have been exposed to it should not be allowed into this (or any country) until after a mandatory 21 day isolation period  (Maybe even longer). You go to the airport, employees there ask where are you coming from, they say West Africa.  The employees say go home. (of course that doesn’t keep people from lying.)  At the very least any health care worker returning home (wherever home is) after tending to these people should not be out & around for the first few weeks at home.

I got rid of all my outside lights a few years ago & haven’t bought anything new since.  Don’t plan to either.  The day after Christmas is a good day to go look for those things.  You need to go early though for the good stuff.

Good afternoon everybody.  Today is a much nicer day than the last two.  Sunny & warmer.  Well at least it feels warmer because of the sun & no wind.

I plan on going out & pulling all the weeds that re-emerged along the fence.  Maybe this time it will get cold before they have a chance to come back again.

Probably take Chelsea (and myself) for a walk before I start that.

I was sitting in the recliner by the front window for a little while this morning & this Pileated Woodpecker came & landed in the tree at the corner of the yard.  That is the closest to the house that I’ve ever seen one .  Of course , by the time I snuck out there with the camera he was gone.  I can never get a picture of one.   I thought Oh, maybe he’s going to visit the birdfeeder hanging in that tree.  (all excited about that)   But no, he flew away.   The birdfeeder is one of those that close with too much weight (like the squirrels) so he probably couldn’t have used it anyway.    All the smaller birds took off when he landed.

Leslie, are you planning on moving into the new house?   I though you were going to stay where you were.  Especially after doing all that work on it.

Everybody sound like they have a busy day planned.  Enjoy it.

Good afternoon everybody.  A nicer day today; sunny & 57º at 9:45. I opened the door on the GH to let some fresh air move through.

I think I’ll go pull th re-emerging weeds from along the fence when in a little while.  Maybe cold weather will get here before they have a chance to grow more.

I talked to Mike yesterday & Maddalene will start gymnastics classes this weekend.  I think she’ll like that.  I’ve suggested it several times but her Dr.(s) didn’t want her to do it when she was younger.  She no longer has to go to the “specialists” so no more restrictions.    I’m just wondering how the half toes on her one foot will affect gymnastics?  But it doesn’t seem to bother anything else she does so I expect it will be fine.  She even wears Flip Flops which I didn’t think she was going to be able to do.

And they started Golf lessons last week.    Seems one of the Tae Kwon Do parents is all into Golf & got a bunch of kids from those classes together & contacted a guy who agreed to give them lessons on Sat.  Mike told me Maddalene has been wanting to do it for a while but just didn’t work out over the summer.  He was telling me she steps up for her 1st attempt at swing the golf club & the instructor say “Oh,  I can see you’ve done this before” .  Maddalene says “Yep, I played Putt Putt twice”  LOL

He asked Mike if she had ever had any kind of lessons.  Answer to that was no so the instructor says;  Well then, she has a natural swing.   So maybe we’ll have a Black Belt & a Golf Pro in the future.  LOL

Jo Ann thanks for the instructions on the Tomato  Gravy.  I’ll try that sometime.  There were so many different recipes online.   One had tomato juice & bacon added to it, although I’m sure you could make it without the bacon.  But I figured I’d just go to the expert.  :)   But, like you, I always use a roux when making gravy.

I googled salt pork just to see if it was the same thing I was remembering & it is.  I see where you could slice it & fry it up.  Might be pretty good that way.  We just never did it.  I bet it’s cheaper than bacon.   We would cut off a chunk of it & put it on a hook tied to a string when we were kids & go crabbing.  LOL

Hope y’all have a great day

Wow, that is a big carrot.  What are the red flowers in your picture?  Yep, Steve the garden might be ready for winter but I never am.

Jo Ann sent me a couple little pieces of this last year.  Now I have 2 pots of it.  It is a wildflower they call BlueBells so that is what I call it too.  But it is one of those things that doesn’t photograph well.  Last winter I put the pot in the GH.  This yr I am putting one in the GH & leaving one out to see if it will survive the winter here.  This is the outdoor one.
