    INSECT EATING BIRDS

Analysis of 50 years’ bird droppings inside a large decommissioned chimney, provided evidence that DDT and bird diet may have contributed to a long-term decline for populations of insect-eating birds in North America, according to Queen’s University Biology Department research.  This effect had an impact on chimney swifts.  I thought that DDT was banned……it is here!!!  Beetleswere also affected by DDT….a favorite of swifts.

Barn Swallows, Robins, American Woodcocks, Kingsbirds, Bluebirds and Chickadees are some of the insect eating birds.  There are many more species that fit in this category.

A buffet for insect eating birds consists of beetles, bees, wasps, ants, butterflies, moths, and other flying insects.  Grit, pebbles, eggshells, and oyster shells help the bids digest insects, and add calcium to their diet.  Here are a couple of swift pictures thanks to Miki Veltri and Bruce Di LaBio.

Swallows are my very favorite bird.  Unfortunately I don’t have my own photographs, but I know many on this forum have beautiful ones.  So I am hoping a bumper ‘crop’ of pictures of all those beauties mentioned.

    Female Red Wing Blackbird

Old picture but I have to say it was quite an enjoyment watching her skipping along the Marsh picking bugs up.
