    Steve, LOL.

I have tried other flavors like peanut, high energy, and sunflower seed, but the bird’s don’t seem to like them as much. I guess that could be because I live in a more wooded area, though, so the birds at my house probably prefer nuts over seeds (and when I splurged and bought the expensive no-melt orange suet, they wouldn’t even eat it!).

Junior Barnes, You have supported my thoughts that homemade will attract more birds than the best store bought. :)

I heard that comment, Steve. :D)

My recipe is similar. I melt the lard and peanut butter together and then add corn meal flour (don’t add any corn), and I use the old-fashioned whole oatmeal. I also add in a mix of BOSS and other seeds. I forgot to add the dried mealworms. I made balls and a big cake out of it this year. The red and wh. breast ed nuthatch like it. I think I packed it too much this time as I haven’t had many takers, unless you consider a starling a bird you would want. I personally scare them off every chance I get. I don’t need/want them at my feeders. They eat everything in site and chase all my other birds away. I’ll take a grackle over a starling any day.

bwatcher, Yep…you make a similar cake. I tried adding the seeds and my birds didn’t like it as well. I truly feel that my recipe needs to be experimented with and adjusted to the birds in ones area/region. I’s like…find what works for your birds.

I’m lucky…no starlings or house sparrows at my feeders. Knock on Wood. :)

I buy Royal Wing suet at TSC by the box.  I need to get more as only 2 cakes left.
