Since I have started watching birds it has always been hard and I cannot do it today….how to tell the difference between a Purple House Finch and a House Finch. I see this finch that sometimes it is fully colored in the “purple” color and other times it is only partially in color and this is at different times apart so what is partially colored should be in full breeding color. Anyone have a sure way of knowing???? Thank You.

The purple finch has a lighter eyebrow than the rest of the head.

There are other ways too, such as the purple finch does not have as much streaking (in males) as the house finch. They also have a more conical bill (house finches top bill curves down a bit)

Just keep comparing photos of both birds….it will soon be easier to tell.

Ok got it! Now I can see the difference in which you speak. I went to a website that made it so much more clear for me to tell the difference.
