We were recently at Virginia Beach and tried looking up the various gulls we saw there when we got home.  However, we are having trouble identifying them from drawings in our bird books.  We think one was a laughing gull.  Does anyone know which gulls would be common at Virginia Beach or have better photos for identification.  We neglected to take photos, and were just going by memory.  Thank you.

I live not too far from there & if you asked the natives they would probably tell you they were all  GD Gulls.  LOL  Locals are not too fond of them.

In addition to the Laughing Gull you probably saw a lot of Herring Gull.  Those are pretty common around here.

Click on the above link to Cornell University’s bird indentification site…perhaps it will help.

You can find the following book on gulls through the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology bookstore:

GULLS OF NORTH AMERICA, EUROPE AND ASIA, by Olsen Larsson.

    It should prove helpful.

With few exceptions, gulls look pretty much alike. Small individual details set them apart, and it gets more challenging with immature birds. Leg color, ring around bill, red spot on bill, sometimes black wing tips — all of these can be defining features of individual species. But one has to look closely. Knowing their range also helps. Generally, I’ve found gulls to not be easy to identify.
