Inserting images into your posts here on the Community is very simple, but it’s important to remember that Birds & Blooms does not host photos. In other words, you will need to upload your photos first to a photo hosting site like PhotoBucket. You can also use photos you have uploaded to your Facebook page or other social media, or other web locations.

First, find the photo you want to add to your post, and obtain the URL (web address). Learn more about how to do that by clicking here.  (TIP: That link will almost always end in “.jpg”, “.jpeg”, or “.gif”)

In your post, click the small icon on the far right of the toolbar, shown below.

A small box titled “Insert/edit Image” will pop up on your screen. You only need to worry about two of the fields in this box.

In Source, paste the URL of the photo you’d like to share, and press the “Tab” key on your keyboard.

The Dimensions box will pre-fill with the size of your photo. However, the photo may be too large to fit into the posting area. The easiest way to fix this is to change the first box in Dimensions to “500″. Leave the second box blank – the system will calculate the correct numbers when it inserts your photo.

Then click the OK button. Your photo should now appear in your post.

If you’re having problems with these instructions, please post a follow-up question here, and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

That is all I get.   I tried different things in Flickr and once got a link, but when I clicked on the blue part it said it wasn’t available.  Help!

Pat. I think that is an error in the directions.  Try clicking on direct link and I think it will work for you.

Flickr is a little bit different as far as getting the right URL. You have to click the menu for individual photo and select “View All Sizes”. Once you do that, you’ll get an image you can pull the URL from. I’ll post a  how-to with photos in just a little bit, OK?

Argh. On doing a little more research, it seems that the workaround I was going to post here for getting direct links from Flickr pages is actually against their rules. I’ve asked our tech team to look into this, but I believe that right now, there is no good way to post photos here directly from Flickr. (This is a bummer, because I primarily use Flickr too.)

Going forward, I recommend using PhotoBucket instead, since they allow you to grab a direct link for a photo to paste in here. Here’s how:

Find the photo you want to use on PhotoBucket and click the link button on the top left (outlined in red below).

From the menu of links that pops up, click in the “Direct” box to copy that URL (outlined in red below).

Then follow the directions in the first post on this thread to use that URL to insert images into your post.

I’m sorry about the Flickr issue. Hopefully we can find a better solution to that in the future.

Jill, I use Flickr primarily, too!  I am working on it but I have a tablet here so a whole diff ball game!  I know for one thing that you can resize in flickr, same as in PB.  I am playing w/ that.  I think the 640 size might work.  Sharon’s dh is a good techie, maybe ge can help us out here.  So first try resizing in flickr, then copy url of the kmage.  Like I said, its diff w/ the the samsung tab.  Would the techies know how to instruct me in posting pics w/:the samsing galaxy tablet 10.1″ screen?

Margba – I’ve been using that workaround too. The problem is, the way you and I have been copying the Flickr URL is technically against Flickr’s user rules. Their rules say that if you’re going to use a photo that’s hosted on their site (yours or someone else’s), you have to include a link back to it from anywhere else you put it on the web – in other words, if someone clicks on your photo here on the Community, it has to take you back to Flickr, which we don’t have a way to do right now.

It seems silly, especially when you’re using your own photos, but we at B&B can’t advise you to violate another site’s guidelines for use. So I can’t officially give anyone the instructions to use that workaround method for Flickr. Does that make sense?

I get you! I did go back to PB & finally figured it out w/  PB!  Now I have to remember how I did it so I can do it again!  LOL!  So now I CAN do it w/ the samsung tab (not the cell phone here) but a tablet!  Send folks to me if they want to kniw!  You have to copy the url to the clipboard, then paste to your box!

Jill, go to Sharon’s post in General, titled “practice hete”!  We could use your help!  I can tell folks to come here, too!

Bette,  thank you for your reply.

Jill,  I used to use PB on my old desktop without any problems, but with my laptop that came with Windows 8 when I go to PB I don’t get PB…just other stuff I have not seen before.  That’s why I was using Flickr, but it was working on the old board, cutting off the right side of the pic no matter what size I put into the dimensions.   Someone else on the post I was on would take my photo and stretch it out.  I couldn’t do that without being taken back to my Flickr homepage.

Maybe it has something to do with my computer or Win 8 that I can’t figure out.

Pat, I hadn’t been to PB in a while and when I went there yesterday I had a terrible time getting logged into it.  All I could get was their home page.  Unfortunately I don’t remember what I did to get logged back in.  Maybe just open a new account there and move the pictures you want to use here onto the new account.  From what I read Flicker is a problem with this board.

Pat, use the size 500 dim, as Jill described above.  I found 640×480 works good, too!  I connect to PB the fb connect bar.  Havent used pb in ages! It changes waaaay to often.

Pat, I have been accessing Photobucket from my Windows 8 laptop.  PB is really different than it was when I first started using it, but if I can figure it out so can you.  Promise!

This is what I have figured out so far when using PB to post here:

To add a signature/siggy you have to use the HTML link.

To post a picture use the Direct link.

You can find the links two different ways – 1) if you put your cursor in the upper right hand corner of the picture you want to post, you should see a gear-type of icon.  Hover over that and you will see “Get Links”, click on that  2) or you can click on the picture of your choosing, then find a variety of symbols in the upper left hand corner, between the mail icon and the edit icon you will see a “link” icon, click on that.  This will also give you the list of links you can choose from.

I hope this helps you out!
