I planted some White Cone Flowers from seed last year…They came back up good this year and flowered well…but what it is doing in the seed pod is amazing to me….Have you ever seen a cone flower or any other flower do this …I haven’t….First I will show you what it looked like right after it quit blooming…

note the green stuff coming up in middle of seed pod…

    closer up shot

    several pictures of different angles.

these shoots are growing away from seed pod, so don’t know how long they will get….I think I might have a vine cone flower here…This is going to be interesting to watch and see what it does.

This is not same flower but one just like it while it was blooming……..weird but pretty too.

    Comments please…..

Forgot to post the picture of the original and also the leaves that are coming back around the seed pod look like miniature hosta leaves sorta.

It looks like more flowers growing out from the original flower. Never seen anything like that. Hope someone else knows what is going on. Keep us updated.

The way it looks to me is that each seed in the seed pod is making a plant while it is still on the original flower….hundreds of these babies coming from the seeds….reminds me of the Hens and biddies cactus….

Unfortunately, I think your plant has a phytoplasma  disease called aster-yellows.  Wikipedia shows a picture that could have been out of your garden

Hope Snowwolf sees this and can comment.  Also hope I’m wrong

Sorry to say, but I agree with Joan.  I had a couple coneflowers do that last year and I was excited to watch and see what happened…well, they died.  I read up on it and found out that it was Aster yellows disease and the plant should be pulled and disposed of before spreading to other plants.  Do not throw it in the compost either.  Charlene

I had some that did that and found out it was aster-yellow disease. I had to pull all plants around it to keep it from spreading.

My son has one doing that also. Guess I should tell him to pull it.
