When I first looked what landed on the foundation wall of my house, I got so excited.  I thought it was my first Monarch.  I ran to take a picture of this pretty visitor.  I did notice that it’s wings looked worn out….it must have had difficulty arriving here so far up north.

I then consulted my Reader’s Digest North American Wildlife book, and from the markings it’s not a Monarch but a Red Admiral.  Here it is.  It did not open it’s wings much.

Beautiful! I just saw my first monarch yesterday at my new place!  Will keep my eyes out for them now!  Very cool sighting, Stella!

Red Admirals are very lovely, don’t you think? Here’s more info from a blog post I wrote a few years ago: http://www.birdsandblooms.com/blog/be-on-the-lookout-for-red-admirals/

    Thanks so much for sharing!
