    Hey DSP

How do you create the Digital Sketchbook? I would like to create them too and share with some art educators too

Hi, Sandra!  I’m glad that you would like to make digital sketchbooks also!  I figured out this process because I really like sketchbooks, but am not good at actually drawing on real paper with a real pencil.  I use Adobe Photoshop for my digital ones.

    My process is:

–For each page, create a new Photoshop document any size that you want.

–In the first layer place a photo that you think would make a good “sketch” for the background.  Then lower the opacity until that photo is barely visible, to anywhere between 10 to 30 percent usually.  If you want more realism, you can also desaturate the image so it will look more as if it were drawn in pencil.

–After that you just place the photos that you want (place them one at a time, each in its own layer), and use the Layer Mask to mask out anything that you don’t want in the picture.  You have to be careful to place the photo exactly where you want it, though, before applying the mask …If necessary you can lower the opacity of the top layer temporarily so you can see both photos while you place it.

–Then you just use as many photos and layers as you want, and have fun being artistic with your creation.

I’m using an ancient-yet-dependable CS2 version of Adobe Photoshop, but I imagine that you could do this with any program that lets you use layers, manipulate the opacity of the layers, and apply layer masks.

Let me know if you have any questions once you get started trying it out.  I would love to see some of your creations if you get into this hobby!
