I have a barn swallow that returns to his perch (he has not nested)  under my porch every night after dusk for about 5 weeks now.  He stays there throughout the night.  Isn’t it unusual to see barn swallows alone for so long?  He did disappear for a couple of days but has since returned.

I’m no expert, but I don’t think this is unusual. After all, barn swallows can be aggressive towards each other- male barn swallows that have not mated will sometimes break the eggs in other barn swallow nests. Or perhaps this one is a juvenile, and is to young to nest this year?
