Does anyone know if there is a difference between “alum” and “alum powder”? I am going to be doing pickles, and don’t want to waste any. Thanks in advance.

    Pat-

Sorry I can’t help.  When I started canning most of the “new” recipes that I used omitted the Alum because of the health effects.

Pat…I would avoid alum or anything aluminum (yes alum…aluminum) Research suggests that aluminum from pans and other sources have been found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. (There are probably multiple causes for Alzeimer’s)…but my mother had this horrible disease and cooked with a lot of aluminum, and did a lot of canning; therefore, I avoid aluminum…whether in deodorant or anywhere else.

I’m not even sure if you can buy it anymore.
