When I was invited by Birds & Blooms to become the regional reporter for the Southwest, I was absolutely thrilled. When the editors asked me what I loved most about the Southwest, I couldn’t answer right away. The reason why will be fairly evident for those of you who are fortunate enough to live in this beautiful part of our country. There are just so many different things to love about the Southwest.
I grew up in Southern California and enjoyed both the mountains and the beaches. Once married, I moved to Arizona (25 years ago) and I came to appreciate the incredible beauty of the desert. I do love to travel and been fortunate to have seen the beauty in Nevada, New Mexico as well as Utah. My love for the Southwest has guided my career as a horticulturist. My passion is not only for beautiful gardens, but also attracting native wildlife. Creating hummingbird (pictured above) and butterfly gardens are just some of my favorite projects.
So back to our question – what do I love most about the Southwest? Here is just a small list of some of the things I considered:
– The beautiful California coastline
– The rugged, snow-capped mountains
– The varying shades of red rock cliffs
– The starkness and beauty of the desert
– The incredible variety of plant and wildlife
– The wonderful smell of summer rain
– Wide-open vistas allowing you to see for miles
– The fact that it can sometimes take more then a day to drive through one state
You see….there are just so many things to love about the Southwest. It is almost impossible to choose just one. We live in an extremely diverse area and there is so much to discover and learn about native plants, birds, gardening and local events. I can hardly wait to get started….
My hope is that you will stop by every couple of days for a visit to learn and discover more about the Southwest along with me.
I cannot wait to ‘meet’ you so please leave me a comment. I would like this blog to be a fun place to visit and share what is going on in your garden, what feathered visitors are stopping by, events, etc. Questions are always welcome and I am sure that I will learn a lot from you as well.
In addition to this blog, there are further opportunities to interact with fellow gardeners and birders, by simply visiting Birds & Blooms facebook page. I always come away with great tips and I enjoy seeing the photos submitted from fellow Birds & Blooms readers.
Be sure to ‘Like’ Birds & Blooms on facebook, in order to get the latest tips and updates.
As you will soon learn to expect from me, I usually end my blog posts with a question. So today’s question is…
