Each year, International Vulture Awareness Day is celebrated on the first Saturday in September. Although vultures aren’t the most beautiful or colorful group of birds, they are very important to the environment. Both vultures that occur in the US (Turkey and Black) are doing well but, vultures in other parts of the word aren’t. Many species are listed as either endangered or critically endangered. You can learn more about the plight of vultures and what’s being done to save them here.
In 2016, 164 organizations from 47 countries participated in the event. A huge diversity of organizations participates each year. This greatly increases the number of people that learn about vultures!
Although the 2017 event has already passed, keep an eye on this website for details of the 2018 event.
