Earlier this year on a trip to Costa Rica, we spotted and photographed one of the world’s most spectacular birds, the Resplendent Quetzal. To commemorate the occasion, I decided to make an ornament for our Christmas tree featuring one of our photographs. It’s a great way to remember our trip and that special moment when we decorate the tree each year. This DIY bird ornament comes together in minutes and is both easy and inexpensive to make.
DIY Bird Ornament Supplies
- Two identical miniature photo frames
- Photo of your bird spotting, sized to fit
- Craft glue
- Hot glue
- Embellishment (optional)
Take a look at how your photo frames will look when you put them back-to-back. If they have backing that will keep them from fitting together smoothly, peel off the backing as shown. Be sure to retain any clear covering for the photo section.
Trim your photo to size and glue into place on one frame. Write or print the spotting details on another piece of paper (as shown), trim and glue into place on the second frame.
Cut a piece of ribbon (about 4 inches) and glue into place along the back of one frame as shown to create a hanger. Use hot glue to attach the two frames back to back. Add embellishments as desired. (Tip: If there’s a gap between your frames around the edges, use hot glue to add a piece of thin ribbon or other trim to hide the gap.)
Hang on your tree and enjoy the memories!
