When the updated Birds & Blooms website launched a few months ago, one of my favorite parts was the Backyard Projects section. It’s full of crafty ideas from the pages of our magazines, with step-by-step instructions and plenty of inspiration for everyone! I’ve been wanting to try out the Tomato Cage DIY Bird Feeder project for awhile, and the kickoff of our new Community contest, “Inspired by Birds & Blooms… Made by You!” seemed to be the perfect time.
Our contest challenges Community members to create projects inspired by those on the Backyard Projects section of our site. You don’t need to be an expert builder or crafter – we have projects for every skill level and interest. And you don’t need to create the projects exactly as shown; we want to see the creative spin you put on the projects!
Here’s an example. Take a look at the the Tomato Cage DIY Bird Feeder project. I loved the concept, but wanted to do it as a DIY bird bath instead. Here’s my version of the project. I used a plastic party tray and a margarita glass, both from the dollar store. I added some flair to the glass with rub-on transfers, and used plastic lacing to attach the tray to the tomato cage for a little more stability. I seated the tomato cage down into one of my barrel planters already planted with mini petunias and vervain.
Now we want to see your creations! If you’re not already a member of our Community, click the “Join Us” link in the top right corner of this page. Then, visit our Community to check out some of the great conversations taking place. Once you’ve completed your project, head to the Look What I Made forum and post it for everyone to see. You’ll find complete details about the contest here.
Wondering what you can win, by the way? The winner, selected by our editors, will receive a copy of The Best of Birds & Blooms 2014 along with these PVC pipe hummingbird feeders, featured in our June/July issue. (Learn how to make them yourself here.)
The contest runs through the end of May, so choose a project and get started. We can’t wait to see what you create!
