I’m always very excited to see Acorn Woodpeckers. This bird species occurs throughout the far western United States and much of Central America. (Click here for and eBird range map.) I have the opportunity to see it on many of my trips to high elevation locations in that region. It’s a very beautiful bird with a lot of personality!
Unlike most other woodpeckers, this species lives in large groups. The group spends much of it’s time finding and then storing acorns. Sometimes you can find tress or other wooden structures loaded full of acorns.
Have you seen this awesome species?
