Controlling Bindweed

Is there a nontoxic way to control bindweed?

—Laura Pederson, Louisville, Colorado

Melinda: The only non-chemical way to eliminate bindweed, sometimes called creeping Jenny, is to physically remove it. But be patient. Bindweed has deep roots, and it may take years of persistent pulling on your part to get the job done. Pull it out by hand—if you dig it out or cultivate it, stray pieces could grow roots and reinfest the area. For the same reason, don't compost this and other invasive weeds.
