Bare-stemmed Lilacs

My lilac has lots of leaves at the top, but only bare stems at bottom. How do I correct this?

Melinda:

This is a common sight on lilacs, older hedges and many other shrubs. Renewal pruning will help stimulate new growth at the base of the plant, while reducing its size and improving its overall health.

Remove one-third of the stems at ground level when it finishes blooming, and reduce the height by about one-third. Repeat this for the next two seasons. You'll be amazed at the transformation.
