Bright Yellow Butterflies?

I see lots of bright-yellow butterflies in my backyard. Do you know what these common fliers are?

—Evelyn Willis, Goodrich, Texas

Tom: If they are small to medium-sized butterflies, they are most likely sulphurs. Sulphurs are quite common around yards. Many of them feed on legumes as caterpillars and especially like clover.

Next time you see the sunny fliers, look closely at the markings on the wings. Then use a field guide to compare. It will probably list the host plant they are attracted to. Then you can see if you have it growing in your backyard.
