Birding

Birds Won't Use Bath

Help! I've had two white plastic birdbaths in my yard for years and have never seen a bird use them. I've changed locations and put a few flat rocks in them for birds to perch on. What am I doing wrong?

Blue Jays and Ants

I witnessed blue jays (like the one at right) taking large red ants in their bills and rubbing them under their wings and on other parts of their bodies. Why would they do this?

Bring Back the Martins

When we bought our house, the previous owner left three purple martin apartments that she said were occupied by as many as 44 pairs of martins. But they stopped coming about 3 years before we bought the property because she was unable to maintain the houses. Since then, I've been cleaning the houses every year and keeping other birds out, but haven't attracted any martins. Am I doing something wrong?

Bring the Finches Back

I've heard it's bad to feed birds in spring and summer because it keeps them from using their natural food sources. Is this true?

Bully Hummingbirds

I have a problem with a bully hummingbird that's always chasing the other hummers away. Is there anything I can do?

Butterfly Houses

I hear a lot of talk about butterfly houses. Do butterflies actually use them, or do they just make nice garden decorations?

Can Birds Smell?

This answer may surprise you.

Cardinal Territory

At the end of July, I noticed a male northern cardinal (like the one at right) feeding its fledglings near my bird feeder. The female cardinal approached several times, but the male chased her away. Can you explain this unusual behavior?

Cayenne Pepper and Birdseed?

Someone suggested adding cayenne pepper to birdseed to repel squirrels and other wildlife. But I've heard it can irritate membranes in birds' mouths and throats. Is this true?

Chickadee in Question

Can you tell me what this black-capped chickadee is doing? I've been told it's either cooling off or acting injured to distract predators from its fledglings. Do all birds do this?
