George: This is great photo of a buff-bellied hummingbird in a very interesting position. You have a pretty good guess. This bird could have been stretching.

Another possibility is that it might have been displaying its feathers, trying to attract a mate. If the hummingbird was in this pose for long, it was probably sunning itself, as most birds do when given the opportunity. Whatever it was doing, it's a fun photo.
