Lint for Birds

Is it okay to scatter clothes dryer lint in the yard for nesting material? I've read it will become matted when wet.

George: Although clothes dryer lint will become matted when wet, birds will not use any material that's harmful to their offspring. If you're still concerned, offer cotton yarn, string and hair instead.
