Saving Geraniums
Don't let frostbite put a pinch on your wallet.
Overwintering plants is a great way to save yourself some money come spring. Geraniums are one of the easiest plants to overwinter. Other plants that can be saved using the same method are coleus, fibrous begonias and impatiens.
Follow these steps to successfully save some of your favorite backyard plants from harsh winters.
- Dig up healthy plants at the end of the growing season and plant them in fairly large pots.
- Extensively cut back each plant to about one-third of its original size. (Dip pruner in a solution of 1 part bleach and 9 parts water after each cut to prevent the spreading of disease.)
- Trim or "open up" the middle of each plant to provide air circulation.
- Occasionally water and rotate the pots every few days.
