Colorful Container Solutions

The splash of a container garden adds brilliance where you least expect it. It's the perfect way to brighten up a front entrance, expand a vegetable garden or soften a deck, porch or patio. You can even place pots of annuals among ground covers or in flower beds to add additional color and a new dimension.

Here are three basic design tips for creating colorful containers:

  • Look for perfect matches.

Combine plants that have the same light and water needs, making sure they are the right choice for the light, wind and temperatures of the location you've selected.
  • Save water...and chores.

Drought-tolerant plants are perfect for beginning container gardeners. Moss roses, zinnias and gazania are more tolerant if you need a forgiving watering schedule.
  • No bullies.

Use plants that are equally assertive. Otherwise, fast-growing plants will take over and hide more timid neighbors.
