Meet the Backyard Bird-Watcher…George Harrison

"It's in my genes." That's how George describes his lifelong fascination with birds and nature. His father, Hal, was a nature writer and photographer, and George used to accompany him to locations, where he would take still photographs while his father shot movies.
Since George always knew he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps, he decided to get a degree in journalism from Penn State University.
"I knew the subject of nature from living it," George said. "I just needed the formal training in writing."
Since then, George has written 13 books, produced six specials about backyard birds for PBS television and has written for six different nature magazines. He even helped start Birds & Blooms!
George enjoys life more by doing less—even though he's still pretty busy! Most of his time is taken up by writing, and his backyard wildlife habitat provides plenty of inspiration.
"Something's going on outside my window all the time," George said.
Helping people discover the enjoyment of bird-watching is what George loves most about his job. He encourages newly interested bird-watchers to provide food, cover and water as a sure-fire way to attract birds to any backyard.
When he's not answering questions, George takes advantage of living on a lake by fishing. Not even a frozen lake will stop him—he likes ice fishing, too. Practice must make perfect, since George says he never has any trouble catching fish!
